Repost for January 23, 2023.
The most important commandment is to love G-d. But what was the very first commandment? It was to keep a calendar. In Exodus. Before Passover, G-d establishes the need for each household to have a calendar. Everything else depends on that. Today’s particular commandment is for the first day of every Biblical month: we are to give an offering and blow the shofar. It is known as Rosh Chodesh, literally the "head of the month." We start the month of "being settled," Shevat. It's His good pleasure to settle us into a broad, abundant, and vast place. Our own promised land. The Biblical month always begins on the new moon (meaning no visible moon).
