Swear Word

Repost for January 12, 2023.

When my son James was 3 years old, he was adamant that he knew all of the colors. Blue, red, green, yellow, he was on top of it. So, he would try quizzing me to see if I knew them. “What color is it, mummy?” And then, “Good job, mummy!” One day I answered, “Turquoise,” for a color. James covered his mouth and widened his eyes. He ran to his dad, “Daddy, Daddy, Daddy! Mummy said a bad word! I think Christians are guilty of this, too. When we don’t know something we decide it must not be “for real.” Consider tithing. There’s no tithing in a Shemitah year. It’s not a bad word, it’s just the way it works. No money in, no money out. Oh, we as a family still have given here and there for the joy of it but it’s not mandated by the Levitical tithing system. It’s not a bad word. It’s a concept. But Christians don’t know the Levitical tithe. They quote Malachi 3:10 and move on. As a result they get a portion of their inheritance. Not all of it. At least not more of it. Besides, we all know it’s not turquoise that’s a bad word. It’s fuchsia.
